“Bre McDaniel sets a table for all on her debut album HOWL”
Vancouver Weekly

“At a time when musicians are rewarded for releasing music as swiftly as possible, albums have increasingly become haphazard collections of an artist’s latest work. It’s rare to find an LP that’s concerned with how its tracks can combine to build a greater whole—which is one of the reasons that local songwriter Bre McDaniel’s debut offering stands apart.”

“McDaniel’s voice has an inviting warmth.”
The Permanent Rain Press

Vancouver’s Bre McDaniel is a singer-songwriter and visual artist with a voice that’s been described as “magic on toast”. She has been found gracing the stages of The Vancouver Writers Festival, Khatsahlano Fest, odd cafes and living room carpets from BC to PEI, and her debut full length album Howl (Orphan Girl Records) explores how we need the tonic of wildness. Her recordings are a mix of smokey folk-pop, indie rock, and bare acoustics with similarities to Neko Case or Cat Power. Her current career highlight is getting thousands of people out to a mountain top to see a meteor shower she wrote a song about without asking permission of the provincial park. It went pretty well.

“I want to do a lot of listening to before I share, so that my voice is more grounded when I am invited to share.” McDaniel commented when interviewed by Leslie Ken Chu of Vancouver Weekly.

Howl features field recordings from the coastal landscape that inspired much of the music. Listen close for white noise from waterfalls, crackling embers of a dying fire, violin accompanied flocks of starlings. It was produced with a cast of female collaborators in celebration of the leadership of women today, and brought together many pearls of the BC music scene:

Elisa Pangsaeng
producer/engineer (Shad, You Say Party, Said the Whale)
Kathryn Calder (The New Pornographers, Oscar St Records)
Trish Klein (The Be Good Tanyas)
Coco Culbertson (Bif Naked,The Gay)
Laura Smith (Rococode)
Jenny Banai, and more.
